This LinkedIn "Warning" Is a Phishing Scam

This week’s scam starts with a simple LinkedIn post. Shortly after posting, you may receive what looks like an official response from LinkedIn itself. The message appears as a public comment on your post, claiming your account has been temporarily restricted due to a violation of LinkedIn’s policies. It includes the LinkedIn logo and urges you to click a link to resolve the issue and restore access to your account.

Despite how convincing it looks, this comment is not legitimate. It’s actually posted by a cybercriminal impersonating LinkedIn. If you click the link, you’ll be taken to a fake website that prompts you to “verify your identity.” Entering your username and password on this page gives scammers direct access to your login credentials, and potentially your entire account.

How to protect yourself from this phishing scam:

  • LinkedIn does not notify users of policy violations through public comments on posts.
  • Be wary of messages that use urgent or threatening language, such as warnings about account suspension. Scammers rely on fear and urgency to push you into acting quickly.
  • If you see suspicious comments or replies claiming to be from LinkedIn, report them right away. This helps the platform take action and protects other users from being targeted.
