Financial Literacy

Financial success is impossible without understanding personal finance.  At LOSB we have dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to educating students, adults, and seniors about many different personal finance topics.  We have been doing financial literacy programs for nearly 3 yrs.  What began as visits to a local high school has expanded to numerous schools, community groups, and organizations.

Our financial literacy programs were founded on curriculum produced by the American Banker's Association (ABA).  Since then we have developed our own activities and lesson plans according to the needs of the groups we are teaching.  Our delivery methods range from hands-on budgeting activities to informational speaking engagements, depending on the group we are teaching and the topics we are discussing.

We have been well received by the individuals we are teaching.  We feel their is a definitive need for financial literacy in the communities we serve.  We at LOSB hope to continuously expand and enhance our program to reach more students, adults, and seniors.

Below are examples of some of our financial literacy activities:
  • Baldwin Community Schools to teach principles of personal finance from balancing to borrowing
  • Pine River Schools to teach elementary students the basics of money
  • Bi-weekly personal finance articles in the Pioneer
  • Big Rapids High School to teach juniors and seniors about saving and budgeting
  • Ferris State University to teach students about the financial transition from college to the working world
  • Reed City Schools to teach banking basics
  • Victory Life Christian Ministries to teach members of the congregation about personal finance
  • Mecosta County Community Mental Health to teach individuals about budgeting and saving
  • Banking Forums for Chamber of Commerce members to discuss the banking industry
  • Michigan Works! West Central to teach consumers about the principles of budgeting and credit.
